Frequently asked questions
-
Yes. Nespresso offers selected coffees made from 100% organic coffee.
Our current organic blends include Peru Organic and Kahawa ya Congo, available in both the Original and Vertuo ranges.
In addition to our organic coffees, many Nespresso coffees are sourced through the Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan. This program was created in collaboration with the Rainforest Alliance in 2003 to help improve farming practices, coffee quality and the long-term wellbeing of coffee-growing communities.
Through the Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan, Nespresso works with farmers to improve the quality of the final coffee while supporting environmental, social and economic sustainability.

-
The best-before date for Nespresso coffee capsules is usually around 12-15 months from the date of manufacture.
When ordering from nespresso.fi, your coffee should have at least 2 months remaining before the best-before date at the time of delivery. The date is printed on the coffee sleeve.
Nespresso guarantees the freshness, aroma and quality of the coffee until the best-before date. The coffee does not immediately lose its flavour after this date, but the aroma may gradually become less intense.
You can also check the capsule film. If the film is slightly rounded, the capsule is still sealed and the coffee is fresh.
-
The caffeine content depends on the coffee blend, cup size and amount of Robusta coffee used.
Most Nespresso espressos contain approximately 50-100 mg of caffeine per cup. This includes Original Espressos and Lungos, as well as Vertuo Espressos, Gran Lungos and Double Espressos.
Some coffees contain more caffeine:
Vertuo Diavolitto contains around 150 mg of caffeine per cup.
Original Kazaar contains around 120 mg of caffeine per cup.Vertuo Mug coffees, including Alto coffees, usually contain around 170-200 mg of caffeine per cup. Larger formats, such as Carafe Pour-Over Style coffee, may contain more than 200 mg per capsule because they are intended to be shared or enjoyed over several cups.
Caffeine content can vary slightly because coffee is a natural product.
-
No. There is no BPA in direct contact with the coffee.
-
Nespresso coffee capsules do not contain common food allergens such as dairy, gluten, nuts, soy or eggs.
For flavoured coffees, the flavour may be inspired by ingredients such as vanilla, cocoa or caramel, but the capsules do not contain pieces of those ingredients.
Words such as “malt”, “chocolate” or “biscuit” usually describe the aromatic profile of the coffee. They do not mean that these ingredients are present in the coffee.
-
Yes. Nespresso black coffee capsules are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, as they contain coffee and do not contain milk or animal-derived ingredients.
For flavoured coffees or limited editions, we recommend checking the product information on the coffee page before ordering.
-
Original and Vertuo are two different Nespresso systems.
Original capsules are designed for espresso-style coffee and milk-based recipes. They are compatible with Nespresso Original machines.
Vertuo capsules are designed for a wider range of cup sizes, from espresso to large mugs and carafe-style coffees. Vertuo machines read the barcode on each capsule and automatically adjust brewing settings.
Original and Vertuo capsules are not interchangeable. Original capsules can only be used with Original machines, and Vertuo capsules can only be used with Vertuo machines. Learn more about the differences here.
-
No. The same grinding technology is used for both Vertuo and Original coffees. However, each coffee is developed specifically for its system, capsule size and cup result.
-
Store your coffee capsules in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
The capsules are designed to protect the coffee from air, light and humidity, helping to preserve freshness until the best-before date.

Each Nespresso coffee sleeve contains 10 capsules*. The minimum coffee order is one sleeve, meaning 10 capsules.

Machines and Maintenance
-
Descaling frequency depends on your machine model, water hardness and how often you use the machine.
As a general rule, we recommend descaling your machine regularly to maintain coffee quality and machine performance. Many Nespresso machines will notify you when descaling is needed.
You can find model-specific descaling instructions on the machine's respective page.
-
Descaling removes limescale buildup from inside the machine. Regular descaling helps maintain the coffee temperature, flow, taste and long-term performance of your machine.
-
We recommend using the official Nespresso descaling kit. It is designed specifically for Nespresso machines.
-
First, check that the machine is properly connected, filled with water and cleaned according to the user manual.
You can find machine specific user manual and frequently asked questions on each machines page.
If the problem continues, contact Nespresso Customer Service. Please have your machine model and serial number ready when contacting us.
-
The serial number is usually located on the underside of the machine, behind the water tank or on the machine packaging.
The exact location depends on the machine model.
-
No. Original capsules can only be used with Original machines, and Vertuo capsules can only be used with Vertuo machines.
Using the wrong capsule type may damage the machine or prevent it from working correctly.
Recycling and Sustainability
-
Yes. Nespresso aluminium capsules are recyclable.
Used capsules can be returned through Nespresso recycling options available in Finland. Please check the recycling page for the latest return points and instructions.
-
Nespresso uses aluminium because it helps protect the coffee from oxygen, light and moisture. This preserves the aroma and freshness of the coffee.
Aluminium is also recyclable, which allows used capsules to be recovered and given a new life when returned through proper recycling channels.
-
After collection, the aluminium and used coffee grounds are separated.
The aluminium can be recycled, while the used coffee grounds may be composted or used for other recovery purposes depending on the local recycling process.
-
The Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan was created with the Rainforest Alliance in 2003.
The program helps farmers improve coffee quality, productivity and sustainability. It also supports better social, environmental and economic practices on coffee farms.
Nespresso sources a large share of its coffee through the Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan and continues working to increase sustainable coffee sourcing.
-
You can reduce the environmental impact of your order by ordering larger batches less frequently, recycling your used capsules and choosing delivery options that suit your needs efficiently.
