At Nespresso, responsibility and sustainable development move forward in many ways. Protecting coffee-growing environments, supporting the socio-economic wellbeing of farmers, and third-party reporting are just some of our many initiatives.

Circularity

The Positive Cup strategy
The Positive Cup is Nespresso’s sustainability strategy with defined priorities and targets for 2021–2030, including climate, circularity, and community-focused goals.
Nespresso is a Certified B Corp and has been recognised by World Finance as Most Sustainable Company in Coffee Processing (industry award) in 2021 and 2024.
Circularity with aluminium capsules
Nespresso capsules are made from aluminium to protect coffee freshness and quality. When recycled, aluminium can be recovered and used again. Nespresso reports using at least 80% recycled aluminium in Original and Vertuo capsules*.
*with exceptions for Vertuo Carafes, Limited Editions, Alto and Cold Brew capsules.
Climate commitments & measured progress
Nespresso states it is committed to net zero GHG emissions by 2050 in accordance with SBTi standards, and reports climate progress through defined metrics. In 2024 reporting, Nespresso reports 286,000 tCO2e reduced vs business-as-usual in 2024. Nespresso also reports 10 million trees delivered in coffee landscapes between 2014 and 2024, with 9 million expected to contribute to carbon removal.
Coffee communities & farmer support
Through the Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan, Nespresso reports working directly with farmers since 2003 and scaling on-the-ground support. Reported 2024 figures include over 168,500 farmers, 18 countries, 863 field staff, and 91% of coffee sourced through the programme. The Positive Cup includes a livelihoods goal for smallholder farmers in Colombia, Guatemala, Indonesia, Mexico and Peru to receive the Living Income Reference Price by 2030 (reported).
Certifications, partnerships, and independent assurance
Nespresso uses recognised frameworks and independent assurance to support transparency. Nespresso is a Certified B Corp, and Nespresso’s reported sustainability metrics include external assurance elements (for example, Bureau Veritas referenced in progress reporting). Nespresso also works with partners to support farmer resilience and programme delivery, including organisations referenced in The Positive Cup context such as TechnoServe and Fairtrade.
